Between 1970 and 1974 NASCAR’s Western Grand National and Winston West cars ran at Spanaway Speedway. Dick Bown took the Spanaway 150 in 1970. Jack McCoy won it in 1971 and again in 1972, Ray Elder in 1973, Jimmy Insolo in 1974. A quarter-mile paved oval on a former dairy farm, three miles east of Highway 7 — and for five summers it had a national series on it.
The rest of the week it belonged to everybody else. Hobby stocks, street stocks, figure-8 and spectator drags, four race days a week when it was busiest. USAC supermodifieds came back in 1985 and 1986. The Bonesses sold up after the 2003 season and the land became a housing development. This one is for the seventies specifically — the years the big cars came to Spanaway.
