The Boness family looked at their own farm in Spanaway in 1956 and decided it would make a better racetrack. Dick and Wanda Boness ran it for more than forty years; Wanda was known around here as the first lady of auto racing in Pierce County. It started as a dirt oval, changed length more than once, and finished as a quarter-mile of asphalt three miles east of Highway 7 on 22nd Avenue East. At its peak it ran four days a week — Sunday afternoons plus Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Hobby stocks, street stocks, figure-8, spectator drags, supermodifieds, and for five summers in the early seventies NASCAR’s western series. Derrike Cope grew up in Spanaway, went to Bethel High School, raced this track and won the 1990 Daytona 500. Tom Sneva ran supermodifieds here before taking the 1983 Indianapolis 500. The track closed after the 2003 season and the land went to housing. There is a reunion every year now, because the people are the only part left.
