All measurements in inches, taken on the garment laid flat — chest is half the circumference, so double it to compare against your own chest measurement. Body length runs from the high point of the shoulder to the hem at the back. Tee sleeve is measured from the centre back neck, over the shoulder, to the sleeve hem; hoodie sleeve from the centre of the neck down.
Care. Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colours. Non-chlorine bleach only when needed. Tumble dry medium for tees, low for hoodies. Do not iron the print.
Between sizes? These are a classic cut, not slim — most people take their normal size. Size up if you like room, or if you are buying a hoodie to layer.
Ron Bean opened the first Pizza Haven in 1958 in Seattle’s University District, and it became one of the first pizza companies in the country to deliver. Orders went out to drivers over radio phones, and the drivers carried the pizzas in warming ovens built into the back of jeeps and pickups. In Puyallup that meant an old Chevrolet pickup with a propane pizza heater in the bed. No insulated bag, no crossing your fingers — what turned up at your door was still properly hot.
The Puyallup Pizza Haven stood at 505 North Meridian. If you grew up here the routine was the park first and the buffet after: all you can eat, which at ten years old is the finest sentence in the English language. Casa Mia is in that building today.
The chain got to forty-two locations across the Northwest and California, seven hundred people on the payroll, and franchises as far out as Russia, Poland and the Middle East. Then the national chains turned up with deeper pockets. Bean’s partner sold a piece of it off in the mid-eighties, Chapter 11 came in the late nineties and Chapter 7 followed in 1998. The very last Pizza Haven anywhere closed in April 2012.
Worth saying: the propane truck was not a gimmick. It was a small company in the Puget Sound solving the hot-pizza problem two decades before anyone had a thirty-minute guarantee, and solving it better.
