All measurements in inches, taken on the garment laid flat — chest is half the circumference, so double it to compare against your own chest measurement. Body length runs from the high point of the shoulder to the hem at the back. Tee sleeve is measured from the centre back neck, over the shoulder, to the sleeve hem; hoodie sleeve from the centre of the neck down.
Care. Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colours. Non-chlorine bleach only when needed. Tumble dry medium for tees, low for hoodies. Do not iron the print.
Between sizes? These are a classic cut, not slim — most people take their normal size. Size up if you like room, or if you are buying a hoodie to layer.
Edgewood Square opened in 1963 at 727 Meridian Avenue East with a Piggly Wiggly among its first tenants. A Walgreens sits on that ground today, at 729. It was a small store with a burnt orange tile floor, and the cookie card was the entire point of the trip: you carried it to the bakery counter and they handed over a free cookie. Play it right and it was a doughnut. A maple bar, if you knew what you were doing.
The chain had earned its place in history long before that. Before 1916 you handed a clerk your list and waited while he fetched everything off the shelves for you. Clarence Saunders opened the first Piggly Wiggly in Memphis in September of that year and patented the whole idea twelve months later: a turnstile at the door, one circuitous path every customer had to walk, a basket you carried yourself, 605 items out on open shelves, and a checkout at the front. Asked why on earth he had chosen that name, Saunders said it was "so people will ask that very question."
Tacoma had them from 1924 — a dozen or so by 1930, on Market and Broadway and Proctor and South Tacoma Way — until Safeway absorbed the lot during the thirties. Then in 1954 a Tacoma grocer named Chic Hogan brought the name back, opening the first new Piggly Wiggly built in the Pacific Northwest in twenty-two years, at 10th and Main in Puyallup. His stores ran through Tacoma, Parkland, Fife, Edgewood and Puyallup into the late eighties. The one he built at 4502 North Pearl Street in 1962 is still standing.
So the design says the original self service, and it means it — but around here it also means a burnt orange floor and a free maple bar.
