All measurements in inches, taken on the garment laid flat — chest is half the circumference, so double it to compare against your own chest measurement. Body length runs from the high point of the shoulder to the hem at the back. Tee sleeve is measured from the centre back neck, over the shoulder, to the sleeve hem; hoodie sleeve from the centre of the neck down.
Care. Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colours. Non-chlorine bleach only when needed. Tumble dry medium for tees, low for hoodies. Do not iron the print.
Between sizes? These are a classic cut, not slim — most people take their normal size. Size up if you like room, or if you are buying a hoodie to layer.
The sign on this shirt is a real one, and we can prove how far back it goes. The oldest picture anyone has turned up is a frame of state highway survey film stamped 22 November 1982, SR 007 northbound — the Department of Transportation out photographing its own road, catching the Calico Cat by accident. Same bones as the design here: the cat up top, Calico Cat in casual script, MOTEL in heavy block capitals, the whole thing on a pole over a low motel with a bright red door. Look past it in that frame and you can see the rest of the strip, sign after sign down Pacific Avenue, every one of them shouting at the same lane of traffic.
It was never neon, whatever anyone tells you — an internally lit box with a plastic face, which is its own kind of roadside beautiful. Sign hunters photographed it properly in 2009, 2011 and 2013, by which time the lower panel had been refaced: navy with cream lettering over alternating red and orange blocks, and later white with CALICO CAT in blue serif capitals and MOTEL in magenta. The cat stayed put through all of it, long-necked and winking, up at the top where he belonged.
One thing worth correcting, because it gets repeated: this was never a Highway 99 motel. Old 99 ran up South Tacoma Way. The Calico Cat sat on State Route 7 — Pacific Avenue, the Parkland and Spanaway road — which was always its own strip, with its own traffic and its own reputation. The state’s 1982 film says so right in the corner of the frame: SR 007.
And it had a reputation. If you grew up down the street you already know what it was, and nobody here is pretending otherwise. The Health Department shut it in November 2016. The family who owned it then put about eighty thousand dollars into the place and reopened it as the Pacific Lodge in late 2017. They sold in 2024. It is still taking bookings today, under new owners. This design was never about the rooms. It is about the cat.
We know the sign was standing in November 1982. Nobody has written down when it first went up, who built it, or who drew that cat — not the library, not the historical society, not one newspaper.
