Not an accident — eight one-gallon cans of paint thinner, and a man who went to prison for first-degree arson. He was later named in a federal indictment as a hired torch for a Pierce County protection racket that brought down fifteen people, the county sheriff among them. The burned pilings stood out in the water for more than twenty years.
