Winding blue flumes rising straight out of the grass, and every family and teenager on the hill on them the moment the weather turned. It ran through about 1986.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen the ground got valuable. Construction on the South Hill Mall began in October 1987 and the first stores opened on 20 July 1988 — the slides had been gone barely a year. If you want to stand where it was, it is out by the mall theatre parking lot. Flat asphalt now, and nothing there to tell you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne honest note on this one. Almost none of it is written down anywhere — no newspaper archive, no historical society file, no photograph in a library collection. What exists is what people remember.
