In 1921 he and John Teglia opened a lunch counter at 1514 Pacific Avenue, in the middle of Tacoma’s Little Italy, a short walk down from Union Station. It became the Avenue Cafe in 1935 and Bimbo’s in the early fifties. Through Prohibition the neon out front advertised spaghetti and ravioli, and a quiet word could get you rather more than that. Police raided the place in 1931. Vittorio had friends at City Hall and stayed in business.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat people came for was the red sauce. Legend has it the pot was started the day the cafe opened and was never emptied, only added to. Bimbo’s closed in late September 2001 after eighty years, and the city bought the name and four sauce recipes along with the building.
